Project Brief

BC Ferries sought a program management and engineering partner to deliver the long-term renewal of the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, one of the busiest transportation gateways on Canada’s west coast. The project will modernize ageing infrastructure, accommodate a new generation of larger ferries, improve passenger experience, and strengthen connections between the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, Bowen Island, and Vancouver Island. Although the procurement focused on program management rather than architectural design, Stantec recognised an opportunity to communicate a broader vision for the terminal’s future.

My Role

Although I was not part of Stantec’s Ports and Marine team, I was brought in to create the lead visual for the proposal. I developed a conceptual vision for a future terminal, taking cues from the BC Ferries logo, respecting the coastal setting with natural materials. The control tower featured a First Nations motif that should be treated as a placeholder for artwork that would need to be led and designed by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations if adopted.

The image was not intended as a final design, but as an aspirational vision that helped position Stantec as a credible future design partner as the existing terminal buildings approach the end of their service life.
